Technical SEO audit checklist for 2026
A technical SEO audit should check, in order: crawlability and indexation, mobile usability, Core Web Vitals and page speed, canonical and redirect correctness, and schema coverage. Fix issues in that order, because content and link work can't compensate for a page search engines can't properly crawl or render.

1. Crawlability and indexation, first
Nothing else on this list matters if a page isn't reachable and indexable.
- robots.txt isn't blocking pages that should be indexed
- No stray noindex tags left over from a staging environment
- XML sitemap is current, submitted, and doesn't list broken or redirected URLs
- Internal links actually connect important pages; nothing important is orphaned
2. Mobile usability
Most search traffic, and effectively all AI crawler evaluation, treats mobile rendering as the baseline, not a secondary check.
- Text and tap targets sized correctly without zooming
- No content that only appears after a hover state with no mobile equivalent
- Layout doesn't break or overflow horizontally on common screen widths
3. Speed and Core Web Vitals
Slow pages get crawled less thoroughly and rank worse, independent of content quality. Real user data (field data) matters more here than a single lab test.
- Largest Contentful Paint, Interaction to Next Paint and Cumulative Layout Shift in the green range on mobile
- Images sized and compressed appropriately, not scaled down in the browser
- No render-blocking scripts delaying the main content
4. Canonical, redirects, and schema
Lower priority than the above, but each one quietly costs visibility.
- Canonical tags are self-referencing and correct, not pointing at the wrong page
- No redirect chains of more than one hop on important pages
- No soft 404s returning a 200 status for pages that no longer exist
- Schema present and in sync with what's actually visible on the page
