SEO in Sri Lanka: agency, freelancer, or software?

Choose based on what actually needs a person: strategy, market judgment, and content that requires firsthand expertise are where a freelancer or agency earns their fee. Recurring technical audits, schema, and keyword research are mechanical work that software can run directly, usually cheaper and on your own schedule. Many teams end up using both.

Work out what actually needs a person first

Not all SEO work is the same kind of work. A technical audit, a schema check, and a keyword research pull follow a repeatable process, which is exactly what software is good at running on a schedule. Deciding which pages matter to your specific customers, writing content that reflects real expertise, and negotiating a partnership or backlink is judgment work, which is where a freelancer or agency earns their fee. Most SEO budgets buy some of each without separating the two, which makes it hard to tell what you're actually paying for.

When software alone is enough

If your site is straightforward, you're comfortable reviewing and approving suggested changes yourself, and you mainly need the technical foundation covered, a self-serve platform can run the audit, schema, and keyword research directly and put the findings in front of you for approval before anything publishes. That's usually the cheaper and faster path for a single site.

When it's still worth hiring someone

If you need a specific point of view on which markets to target, content written by someone with real expertise in your industry, or you're managing a large, complex site that needs judgment calls software can't make, that's a person's job. If you go this route, start with what they show you, not what they claim.

  • Anyone can claim to be "the best SEO company." Ask for the kind of engagement, not necessarily a client name, and get specific about what was delivered — technical fixes, content, structured data, ongoing tracking — not a vague "we did SEO for them"
  • A monthly PDF with a ranking graph is the minimum, not the standard — ask how you'll see the specific changes made to your site as they happen
  • Get the scope in writing before the price: technical audits, content production, link building, and AI search visibility (GEO/AEO) are often separate line items even when marketed as one package

Red flags worth walking away from

A short, specific list, not an exhaustive one:

  • A guaranteed #1 ranking or a guaranteed timeline — nobody controls Google's algorithm
  • Refusal to explain what they'll actually do, beyond "trust the process"
  • Link-building tactics they won't name specifically (this is where manual Google penalties come from)
  • No way to see what's changed on your own site, from a person or a platform
  • Pressure to sign a long contract before any audit or scoping work has happened

Many teams end up using both

It's common, and often the most cost-effective setup, to run the technical foundation on software and bring in a person specifically for content strategy or a market you're newly entering, rather than paying a full retainer for everything or trying to do market judgment work with a tool that isn't built for it.
