How to get your website cited by ChatGPT

To get cited by ChatGPT, allow OpenAI's crawlers in robots.txt, serve complete server-rendered HTML, describe your business consistently so it resolves as a clear entity, publish specific information that cannot be found everywhere else, and structure each page around one question with the answer stated up front.

Access comes first

ChatGPT browsing and search use OpenAI's crawlers. If GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot are disallowed, your pages are not candidates. Check robots.txt on the live domain, including any CDN-level rules you may not have written yourself.

Give it something worth quoting

Assistants prefer sources that add information: a number, a process, a constraint, a price range, a local detail. Generic advice pages are summarized without attribution because the model does not need you to produce them.

Make attribution easy

Clear author and publisher information, visible dates, a stable URL, and Article schema all make it easier for a system to name you as the source rather than paraphrase anonymously.

Track prompts, not keywords

Keep a list of the prompts your buyers would type, check them monthly, and note which sources get cited when you do not. Those sources tell you exactly what your page is missing.
